Jail time for the building trades

Date Posted: April 5 2013

Coming out of the ground this spring in Detroit is the new Wayne County Jail, a $300 million-plus detention facility that’s expected to have beds for 2,100 prisoners.

The 715,000-square-foot facility is being wedged into a tight site near Greektown, across from the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice on property bordered by Gratiot, St. Antoine, Clinton and the Chrysler Service Drive. The new six-level jail (two basement, four above ground) is expected to consolidate prisoners from two downtown jails, as well as the Hamtramck jail, saving Wayne County about $20 million a year. The county says as well as reducing costs, the project will “eliminate redundant procedures and increase safety to jail personnel, the public and inmate population.”
THE FOUNDATIONS and sublevels were in place last month as the new Wayne County Jail starts to rise. The first floor will house registry, kitchen laundry, lobby desk, video visitation and staff areas. The infirmary and medical areas will be on the second floor.  Inmate housing will be on the second, third and fourth floors.
