Support prevailing wage - DO NOT SIGN the petition

Date Posted: June 9 2017

Across Michigan, clipboard holders will return this summer to your local gas station, your daughter's softball game or some other place where the public gathers, asking for your signature on a petition proposal intended to eliminate the Michigan Prevailing Wage Act.

Please decline to sign the petition, and ask your friends and family to do the same. If the petition drive is successful, studies show that construction workers' wages decline, labor-management training programs suffer, and taxpayers don't save a dime.

Sponsored by the Associated Builders and Contractors and their front group, Protect Michigan Taxpayers, identical petition drives in 2015 and 2016 intended to repeal prevailing wage failed miserably. The first effort was the victim of fraudulent signature gathering, the second died of unknown causes.

Now the ABC has vowed to try to repeal the state law once again through the petition process.

Based on personal accounts of run-ins with the petition gatherers, they're likely to say anything to get your signature, which would net them a few dollars each. You might be told that your signature will save taxes, make construction jobs safer, or increase! wages for construction workers. State law is fuzzy on what petition gatherers can say or cannot say.

So to protect your wages and Michigan's construction industry, simply decline to sign!
