Steel's up quickly, at Quicken

Date Posted: August 1 2014

The Quicken Loans Data Center’s structural steel was topped out July 11, as Iron Workers Local 25 members, above, and Sterling Erectors moved quickly to make the building ready for its next construction phase. Located at Rosa Parks Blvd. and Porter Street in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, the 66,000 square-foot data center and office complex will include server rooms, training, office and support space. Half of the data center will be occupied by Quicken Loans’ technology team. Work began in May, with the construction and management conducted by Bedrock Real Estate Services, a Quicken Loans affiliated real estate firm, and has proceeded quickly.

“It went great, really fast, and it’s been a safe job,” said Sterling Erectors foreman Drew Johnson, “Not even a cut finger.” Casadei Steel fabricated the structural iron, which was topped out in an unusual way, with the placement of a prefabricated, centrally located steel staircase.

The overall project is being managed by Turner Construction. Project Superintendent Luke Augsperger said about 38 tradespeople were working on site when the steel was topped out. “We’re on a fast pace, and the trades are doing great,” he said. “They’re good guys, and they’re really working together well.”
